The second victim in Friday’s motorcycle crash at Rockingham Dragway remains at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he is in serious condition, according to staff at Carolinas HealthCare System.

This condition, the hospital said, is defined by potentially unstable vital signs which may not be within normal limits, a patient who is acutely ill, or other questionable indicators.

According to reports, Thomas M. Lipka of Lancaster, Penn., was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center on Friday after crashing into a tower at the dragway along with 27-year-old Michael Andrew Roberts.

Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said, and Lipka was placed in intensive care at the Charlotte hospital.

Detective Jay Childers of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said the two were riding on the dragway in the wrong direction when they lost control of the motorcycle and crashed.

A reconstruction team is continuing to investigate details of the accident.

Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons Jr. said the two victims were at the dragway for the the 13th annual Smoke Out bike rally which ran Friday and Saturday of last week.
