The Hoffman Parks and Recreation Complex and Men on a Mission sponsored a Father’s Day celebration, held this past weekend.

A two-day basketball tournament was held, with sons and fathers competing in a basketball battle between Hoffman Bulldogs and Southern Pines Thunder.

“The championship concluded on Saturday and was won by the Southern Pines Thunder, who received trophies,” said Hoffman Councilman Daniel Kelly.

On Saturday morning, Men on a Mission gathered together and marched from Fletcher’s Chapel Church on Seaboard Street to Hoffman Parks and Recreational Complex on Thompson Street. The march was lead by Grand Marshals Bobby Collins, Winston-Salem State University Men’s Basketball coach, and Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons Jr.

“Prior to the march, the men gathered together in a circle, with joined hands and were lead in prayer by Minister Michael Collins Sr.,” said Kelly. “Upon arriving at the Hoffman Parks and Recreation Complex, the Men on a Mission, and others gathered together once again and opened the celebration ceremony with a selection, under the direction of Minister of Music at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Damon Clark. After the selection, scripture Psalm 23 was recited in unity, and was followed by prayer lead by Minister Kevin Thomas.”

Collins spoke to the men present about his achievements, about God, about the importance of education and his career. Clemmons also spoke about education, respect and pursuing one’s dreams.

Stephanie Gibson performed the National Anthem before the festivities began.

Deacon Ernest Gilmore won the cash drawing.

George Mayhew of Jackson Springs was the lucky winner of the car raffle. He won a 1999 Buick Regal.

The last event of the day was a bike and car show, and first and second place winners took home trophies.

The Father’s Day celebrations concluded on Sunday morning at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church during the 11 a.m. morning worship service.
