ROCKINGHAM — When the Richmond Senior girls basketball team takes to the court this winter, it will be under the direction of a new coach.

The administration at the school informed Nellie Harrington her contract would not be renewed during a meeting last week.

“I was shocked,” Harrington said. “It certainly wasn’t what I expected. I thought I was going in there to talk about next year and order new uniforms. I had no clue they were going to let me go. As far as I’m concerned, I thought I did a good job and moved the program forward.”

Richmond athletic director Kevin Mabe declined comment when reached by phone Wednesday afternoon.

In a letter sent to Harrington dated May 30, Mabe said, “I have noticed the direction that our women’s basketball program has gone through in the past two seasons. Although we have several quality points concerning our women’s program, I wish to make a change to our women’s basketball program. Being a coach is extremely tough and I appreciate your efforts in helping our student athletes become better people.

“I want to inform you that your position as women’s basketball coach at Richmond Senior High School will not be renewed for (the) next school year and beyond.”

In her three years, Harrington guided the Raiders to a 55-17 record, a 25-5 mark in Southeastern Conference play and captured the league championship in 2011. Harrington was named as the SEC’s Coach of the Year when she was the interim coach in 2010 after leading Richmond to a second-place finish, earning her the permanent position.

The Raiders qualified for the postseason in all three seasons under Harrington and advanced to the second round of the state 4A playoffs in 2010. In its last two playoff appearances, Richmond was knocked out in the opening round by a lower seed. Harrington said the administration talked about February’s first-round home loss to North Davidson.

“They said the girls didn’t seem like they knew what they were doing out there,” Harrington said. “They talked about the team in general and said anything the team did wrong was a reflection on me.”

Former Richmond player Malaysia Bloomfield was surprised when she learned her former coach was let go.

“They wanted a championship that’s all,” Bloomfield said. “The coach can’t get out there and play, the players have to play. The football team didn’t win a championship and they didn’t lay anyone off.”

Mabe said in his letter to Harrington “the search for a new women’s basketball coach will begin immediately until the position is filled.”

The job is currently listed on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s website with a deadline of June 29 to apply.

I totally understand that when someone starts to talk about fairness and equity, how some people throw the racist tag out there so they don't have to actually discuss the merits of an argument. In fact this is something real " Racists " do all the time. They use it as a shield to try and taint the message being delivered. It didn't work back in the 60's and it will not work in the present. Obviously unless you are extremely gullible, anyone can see that this nonsense about losing in the 1st round is nothing but a smokescreen and a way of not telling the truth about the reason for the dismissal. I'll stick by my statement that if underperforming and having disappointing seasons were causes for non-renewal, we would have some football and basketball coaches that would have been long gone! Think about it before you get your racist on. Later

Try looking at the past two years losing in the first-round both years to teams with terrible records. I dont why she thought she was doing a good job as for mentioned. She was more concerned about her purse at the games then beating the more competitive teams. 2011 Playoffs Knightdale 11-13 and 2012 N.Davidson 8-16. And we all know those other wins weren't hard fought in the SEC.

I must be in the twilight zone, Here we have a coach who was coach of the year as a interim coach, won the conference in her second year and made the playoffs in her 3rd being dismissed because her injury riddled team didn't do so well in the 1st round. Having players missing games, especially in girl's basketball, usually will disrupt a teams chemistry for awhile, even after the players come back. This seems like a made up excuse to fire someone for some unknown reason. Unless the person doing the firing is incompetent or worse, 55-17 in HS Girls B-Ball should not be cause for dismissal. One thing is certain, after watching our football team getting stomped by the Scots and being knocked out in the 1st round of the playoffs by a JV team out of Greensboro and watching our Boy's B-Ball team underperform for the last 3 yrs with the enormous amount of talent they had, maybe some more " Non Renewals " need to be happening. Something rotten is going on up at RSHS and the school board needs to do their job and start looking into it. Later!

After reading RealCoach's comments here and over the years, it is without doubt that RealCoach is a huge Racist. The girls b-ball team underachieved. They were healthy when losing to an 8-16 team in the playoffs. The boys b-ball team made it further than they have in many years. The football team here was the team playing with JV players in the playoffs. Houston, Nichols, and Sato were hurt, not to mention linemen. RealCoach needs to spew his racial hatred elsewhere. It has run its course here.
