House and garden weddings can no longer be booked at the Leak-Wall House in Rockingham, “due to circumstances involved,” according to the Richmond County Historical Society’s June newsletter.
According to Neal Cadieu of the Historical Society, an increase in wedding rentals has not been a good thing.
“With the closing of the country club we’ve been hit with a deluge of wedding requests,” said Cadieu. “We’ll have had nine this year. That’s two times as many as in past years. It’s gotten to be more than the volunteer force could handle, and the wear and tear on the house and garden has been considerable.”
“Unlike many public facilities, the society does not have a staff needed to monitor and provide services necessary to support a wedding,” read the newsletter. “At the moment, there are four more weddings scheduled for the remainder of the year.”
Cadieu said that when the house was purchased 12 years ago, the Historical Society decided that weddings could help with income.
“But the financial status of the Historical Society has improved and we can make profit without weddings,” said Cadieu.
Small events with less than 30 people will still be considered, such as bridal showers and business meetings and other events at which children are not present.
In other news:
• There will be no general meeting of the society in July and no newsletter until August.
• In May, the society was host to Leadership Richmond 2012 in a session at the Leak-Wall House as they toured local attractions.
• Hamlet Depot Manager and Hamlet Town Coordinator Miranda Chavis was a guest at the last historical society board meeting. She expressed to the board her enthusiasm for the work ahead of her in developing the new Visitors Center and museum in the old Stinson Building on Main Street in Hamlet, beside the Historic Depot.
