ROCKINGHAM — At this time last year Richmond Senior baseball Ricky Young had a relatively inexperienced team heading into the start of the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League schedule.
By the time the Raiders’ summer season ended, Young saw a glimpse of what the future would hold for his squad. Richmond finished second in the Deep South Division and advanced to the CCSSL playoffs before bowing out in the first round to Garner.
In the spring, the Raiders continued their good play advancing to the 4A East Region championship series and posting a 25-8 record.
Young hopes for a repeat performance again this summer and next spring.
Richmond was slated to open its CCSSL season against Scotland on Monday. However, because of the Fighting Scots’ vacant head coaching position, Young has had several schedules “finalized” before having to start from scratch.
As a result of the Scotland vacancy, the Raiders’ varsity team will travel to West Stanly at 6 p.m. Wednesday to begin the CCSSL season. The junior varsity squad opens its schedule by heading to Whiteville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Both teams will return to Raider Field for a doubleheader against North Moore beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
