More than 100 golfers will tee off next week in the Richmond County Schools Education Foundation seventh annual Golf Tournament for Technology on Wednesday, June 13, at National Golf Club in Pinehurst. This year’s tournament is dedicated in memory of longtime Foundation member, and former Richmond County Board of Education member, Ed Ormsby, who passed away earlier this year.
The tournament player roster is full, but there are still opportunities for community members to be involved by assisting with sponsorships and donations. Funds are used to purchase interactive technology for the public schools.
Foundation President Priscilla Kindley is proud of how the community has supported the golf tournament in previous years. Kindley represents Southern Builders, Inc., and is also a parent of a senior at Richmond Senior High School. She says the Foundation is committed to ensuring that Richmond County students have exposure to the best technology possible.
“We are passionate about the fact that our students have to be prepared to face the ever-advancing world around them,” Kindley said. “Everyone knows that we are in the midst of serious economic times but our children’s education cannot be compromised. They are our future and it is our complete obligation to supply them with every tool possible to be ready to enter college and/or the workforce.”
The Richmond County Schools Education Foundation was founded in 2001, with purpose of providing funds that directly support public education. Beginning in 2008, the Foundation began to focus its efforts on providing classroom technology to help Richmond County Schools provide more equitable student access district-wide.
The Education Foundation Golf Tournament for Technology serves as the Foundation’s major fundraiser.
Spots are still available for organizations and individuals to serve as sponsors and donors for the event. This year the Foundation added the opportunity for corporate sponsors, and Big Pine Retreat has agreed to serve as a corporate sponsor for this year’s event.
The tournament has grown in popularity each year, and for the first time reached capacity before tournament day. The tournament is held at National Golf Club, thanks to Kenneth and Claudia Robinette. The player fee of $100 covers green and cart fees, range balls, lunch, dinner, a custom RCS Education Foundation polo shirt and a player gift bag. Lunch for this year’s tournament will be donated by Hwy 55 Burgers and Fries (formerly Andy’s). The course will open for registration at 12:30 p.m., with a shotgun start of 2 p.m.
Players will also have the opportunity to play for a hole-in-one on hole number nine, sponsored by Griffin Chrysler Jeep Dodge. Players can also try their hand at closest-to-the-pin, longest drive, and longest putt competitions. Other raffles and door prizes will also be offered.
The Tournament has become a signature event for the Foundation. Kindley shared that the Foundation Board is currently exploring additional fund raising activities, to continue with projects at other schools that have technology needs.
“As we look to increase our fund raising efforts, we hope everyone in the community will be on the lookout for our events and participate to support all of the students in Richmond County Schools,” Kindley said. “When we work we together for the children, we are building our future.”
