Lewis Thad Saunders, 92, of Rockingham, died Friday, June 1, 2012, at First Health Hospice in Moore County.

A funeral service was held held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, at Temple Baptist Church in Rockingham, officiated by Rev. Joey Byrd. Burial followed in the veteran’s section of the Richmond County Memorial Park.

The family received friends one hour prior to services at Temple Baptist Church.

Born March 12, 1920, he was a son of John and Annie Saunders Brewer. Mr. Saunders was a US Army veteran of WWII, a graduate of Tennessee Temple Bible College and a member of Temple Baptist Church in Rockingham.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Brown Saunders of the home; sons, Rev. Alan Saunders of Atlanta, Ga., Ivan Dean Saunders of Kernersville, Jon Isreal Saunders of Miami, Fla.; daughters, Brenda Saunders Hutchins of Miami, Fla., and Nancy Saunders Guth of Trinidad. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Carter Funeral Home of Rockingham is serving the Saunders family.
