The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Richmond and surrounding counties this afternoon and this evening.

Scattered and severe thunderstorms will occur across central North Carolina this afternoon and this evening. The primary severe weather hazards will be damaging wind gusts up to 65 MPH, along with the possibility of golf ball sized hail and isolated tornadoes.

The severe weather threat appears to be the highest between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m.

People across central North Carolina are encouraged to review safety rules in preparation for these storms, and check the latest conditions frequently throughout the day.

These safety guidelines have been issued as a reminder:

- If a severe thunderstorm approaches you or a warning is issued seek shelter in a sturdy building,

- stay away from doors and windows,

- severe straight winds can cause as much damage as tornadoes,

- take cover in an interior bathroom, closet or hallway on the lowest floor.
