ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior softball team was the first Southeastern Conference squad to hit the field in the state 4A playoffs Thursday night.
The remaining three schools from the SEC will open the postseason in contests beginning today. Top seed Purnell Swett (19-5) will play host to Pine Forest (13-12), the No. 4 team out of the Mid-South Conference.
Scotland (11-9) and Pinecrest (9-12) will begin its playoffs on the road. The Fighting Scots earned the third seed from the conference and will play at Millbrook (11-7), the No. 3 team out of the CAP-8. The Patriots were the last SEC school to make the postseason and will travel to Leesville Road (12-7), the second seed from the CAP-8.
Richmond’s baseball team will take on Jack Britt today at 7 p.m. at Raider Field. In other action tonight, the SEC’s regular season and tournament champion Scotland (22-2) will battle South View (11-12). The Tigers finished tied for third in the Mid-South with the Buccaneers, but lost in the one-game playoff last week to fall to fourth.
Pinecrest, the SEC’s No. 3 team, will travel to take on Millbrook (14-7), the third seed from the CAP-8. The league’s fourth seed, Lumberton, battles Leesville Road, the No. 2 seed out of the CAP-8. The Pirates are 15-10 on the season, while the Pride are 14-7.
Three of the four soccer teams have taken the field in the playoffs. Pinecrest, the top squad from the SEC, advanced after defeating South View, the No. 4 Mid-South team, 6-0. The Patriots will host Ashley in the second round. The No. 3 team out of the Mideastern Conference upset Garner, the No. 2 seed from the Greater Neuse River, 4-0.
Broughton, the No. 3 team from the CAP-8, eliminated Scotland, the SEC’s third seed, 7-0. Richmond was ousted by Millbrook on Wednesday.
Lumberton (13-6-3), which earned the SEC’s No. 2 seed, was slated to open the playoffs at home against Pine Forest (12-7-2), the Mid-South’s No. 3 team. However, the game was postponed because of weather and was scheduled for Thursday.
