Mrs. Terry, 94, of Rock Hill, S.C., and formerly of Hamlet, N.C. passed away on April 27, 2012. Esther was born March 31, 1918, the daughter of William and Martha Therrell of Chesterfield, S.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Blue Terry; six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her son, H. Wayne Terry and wife Carroll of Rock Hill S.C., two daughters, Linda Lancaster of Pelham, AL, Karen Retzloff of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, Kimberly Terry Cauble and husband, Andy of Clover, SC, Eric Terry and wife Sara of Florence, SC, Michael Lancaster and wife Mo of Madison, WI; Jeffery Lancaster of Pelham, AL, Ashleigh and Brad Retzloff of Houston, TX, all whom were college graduates; one great grandchild, Liam Lancaster of Madison, WI, one sister, Doris Lambert of Cheraw, SC, and many nieces and nephews.

Esther attended the Chesterfield and Hartsville, SC School Systems. She married Hoyt B. Terry on February 4, 1939. During WWII, when he was in the Army, she was employed with Southern Bell Telephone Co. Later, accompanying her husband, she worked different jobs until he was sent to Hawaii. At that time, she returned to Hamlet for the duration of the war, until his discharge from the Army and return to Hamlet. She graduated from Scotland Memorial Nursing School, Laurinburg, NC in 1960, after the death of her husband in 1958. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Richmond Memorial Hospital, Rockingham, NC in the Newborn Nursery for 21 years. After her retirement in 1973, Esther was very active in the Fellowship United Methodist Church of Hamlet, NC. She had been the oldest Charter Member of her Church and served as a Circle Co-leader, Secretary/Treasurer of a Sunday School Class, was on the Church Board and loved the Church Bazaars. She enjoyed cooking and shared many dishes with her friends. She also enjoyed working in her yard.

She was a devoted mother, wife, sister, mother-in-law, and friend, becoming very independent and courageous, raising three children after her husband’s death. She was a survivor and relied on the Lord for her strength; setting a wonderful example for all.

She moved to Rock Hill, SC in June 2007 to be closer to her son and his wife. She lived at Westminster Towers where she became an avid Rummikub player, was on the Balloon Volley Ball Team, enjoyed Skip-Bo, Scrabble and numerous other activities. She was a great sport, trying most anything; and boy, did she enjoy winning! Esther will be greatly missed by all.

Family will receive visitors on Wednesday, May 2 at Watson and King Funeral Home, 100 Cheraw Rd., Hamlet, NC from 6 until 8 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 1 PM, Fellowship United Methodist Church, with burial following the service at Richmond Memorial Park.
