Calling all motorcycle enthusiasts — the fifth annual Relay for Life Ride, sponsored by Perdue Farms, will be this Saturday.

This year, Perdue Farms is partnering with East Rockingham Elementary School PTA, the Southern Thunder Motorcycle Club and the Hamlet VFW Post 7314 to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

“Our event last weekend at the Moose Lodge was really successful,” said Amy Williams, teacher at East Rockingham Elementary. “We had about 200 people show up and we raised about $3,000. The funds raised from that event and this bike ride will be combined and donated to Relay for Life.”

“We usually have 50 to 100 people turn out for this ride,” said David Goodwin, Perdue employee and member of the Southern Thunder Motorcycle Club.

Goodwin started a Facebook page, called Carolina Biker Connection, to help connect riders who like to attend events and causes.

“There are about 400 people on the page now,” said Goodwin. “I think it’s been a good tool so far to help spread the word to surrounding areas about rides.”

Registration for the ride starts at noon at the VFW beside Hamlet City Lake. Riders will depart at 1 p.m. Registration is $10 donation for a single rider, or $15 for doubles.

Riders will cruise to Cypress Bends Winery in Wagram, and then to P.K. Air Park in Raeford, before returning to the VFW in Hamlet.

“The Air Park is a place where there are always a lot of parachuters and paratroopers making jumps,” said Goodwin. “You can see jumpers coming down continuously.”

Bikers will end the day back at the VFW in Hamlet, where they will eat. Door prize drawings and 50/50 tickets will be available.
