ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond boys tennis team wrapped up its regular season in style, defeating Southeastern Conference rival Scotland 8-1 Thursday afternoon.
The Raiders won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles to finish with a 14-4 overall mark and 7-3 in SEC play.
Colt Auman defeated Aaron Berdeau, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Andrew Balzer downed Walker Davis, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, while Ryan McInnis knocked off Justin Wheeler, 6-3, 6-1. Brandon Ingram stopped Trace Birchfield, 6-4, 6-2, and Juan Olmos beat Carter Dold, 6-4, 6-4.
Scotland’s lone win came when Josiah Boda cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alex Auman in the top singles contest.
In doubles, the Auman brothers defeated Boda and Dold, 8-5. Balzer and Ingram edged Berdeau and Birchfield, 8-6 and McInnis and Olmos knocked off Davis and Wheeler, 8-6.
“It’s the most successful boys’ season I have been a part of,” Richmond coach Paula York said. “It’s the best record we have had in the boys or girls.
“I told the parents after the match that this has been a delightful year and the kids worked really hard on the court.”
The Raiders will participate in next week’s conference tournament at Pinehurst Country Club. The team will have two singles competitors and two doubles teams. York said she hasn’t set a lineup for the tournament, but hopes to finalize one by the weekend.
