ROCKINGHAM — While a lot of his classmates were off enjoying a relaxing Spring Break in sunny locales like Myrtle Beach or Daytona Beach, Richmond Senior’s Tyrone Crowder was also in Florida, but for another reason.
The junior offensive lineman was taking an unofficial visit in Gainesville to meet with the coaching staff at the University of Florida. Crowder walked away with another scholarship offer from the Gators, marking another major football school to be interested in Crowder’s services.
Among the other offers Crowder has received include: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Another handful are expected to come his way. Crowder said Nebraska and Stanford are expected to watch one of the Raiders’ practices during the spring period.
Despite all of the attention and numerous phone calls and text messages he receives from coaches, Crowder said he still doesn’t have a favorite yet. He added he expects to narrow his choices to a top five by the end of summer when he can start making official visits to schools. NCAA regulations limit a recruit to five paid (official) visits during their senior year.
This week, Crowder was listed as one of ESPN’s Top 150 players in next year’s recruiting class. Crowder is ranked 96th by ESPN and second in North Carolina, behind Butler quarterback Riley Ferguson. According to 247.com, Crowder is No. 1 in the state and 54th nationally.
Crowder is not the only Richmond football player garnering interest around the country. Devontae Covington is beginning to reel in offers as well. The junior defensive end received an offer from East Carolina earlier this year and added three more — N.C. State, South Carolina and Tennessee.
In addition, offensive lineman Alex Norton said he recently he received an offer from the Air Force Academy.
Williams steps down at Scotland
LAURINBURG — The Scotland football team will not only have to replace the majority of its contributors to its run to the 4A title last season, but coach Chip Williams as well.
After four years on the sideline with the Fighting Scots, Williams submitted his resignation to the school board Monday evening. Williams finished with a 26-23 record during his tenure at Scotland.
“I don’t think anything that’s happened over my four years here is very much about me at all,” Williams told the Laurinburg Exchange. “I really see our success as an entire community coming together to rally behind a great group of young men.”
Scotland athletic director Tommy Britt said the search is on-going to find Williams’ replacement.
