PEMBROKE — Behind the pitching of Ryan Mercer and the hitting of Jeremy Smith, Richmond Senior blanked Purnell Swett 3-0 in a Southeastern Conference Tuesday night.
Mercer held the Rams to three hits and struck out five in the shutout victory. Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs. Bradley Brown went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and Austin Brower added a hit and a sacrifice fly.
Richmond improves to 15-4 overall and 4-2 in SEC play.
“Ryan pitched a great game,” Richmond coach Ricky Young said. “We played some good defense behind him. However, we left some scoring opportunities out there, but Ryan did a good job of limiting their opportunities.”
The Raiders will return to action at 7 p.m. Friday at SEC rival Lumberton.
Pinecrest downs Richmond in tennis
ROCKINGHAM — The Pinecrest boys tennis team won all three doubles matches and claimed four of six contests in singles to claim a 7-2 victory over Richmond Senior in a Southeastern Conference clash Tuesday afternoon.
Richmond’s Colt Auman downed Will Grine 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Brandon Ingram was victorious over Josh Barnes, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
At No. 1, Pinecrest’s Gray Hamilton defeated Alex Auman, 6-2, 6-1. Don Campbell knocked off Andrew Balzer 7-5, 6-3 and Zach Smith stopped Ryan McInnis 7-5, 6-2. Marc Shaefer edged Juan Olmos 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
In doubles, the team of Hamilton and Smith slipped past the Auman brothers, 8-6. Campbell and Barnes downed Balzer and Ingram, 9-7. Tal Shephard and Grime teamed to down McInnis and Olmos, 9-7.
“We played hard today, but came up short,” Richmond coach Paula York said.
Richmond (13-4, 6-3) will return to the courts at 4 p.m. Thursday in the regular season finale at home against Scotland.
