As the countdown begins for the big Relay for Life event on Friday, May 11, at Raider Stadium, Relay teams are kicking their efforts into high gear with fund-raising activities.

The East Rockingham Elementary School PTO is set to host a benefit, presented by Perdue Farms, at the Rockingham Moose Lodge on Saturday, April 21, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The lodge is located at 128 Crow Run, in Rockingham.

“Each year, Perdue chooses a school to partner with for community support,” said Amy Williams, from East Rockingham Elementary. “Perdue had been helping our school by reading with second grade students during the year. They also help us with fundraisers at the school.”

In return, Williams said the school’s PTO has partnered with Perdue to assist with the company’s Relay for Life event.

“We help Perdue collect donations throughout the county, for auction at the event,” said Williams. “We organize the event, help sell tickets, and help promote the event in the community.”

The event will feature music by The Dixie Ambush band, dancing, an auction, 50/50 drawing and door prizes. Admission is $10 at the door, and all proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

“The Dixie Ambush band has been together for over 20 years,” said band member David Goodwin. “We play a variety of southern rock, new country, Motown and Top 40.”

Everyone in the band plays instruments, and sings.

“We play music that keeps people out on the dance floor,” said Goodwin.
