Delco Transport, Inc. has pledged a $25,000 gift to the comprehensive capital campaign for Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham, the museum announced today. Delco, a Richmond County trucking company owned by Rockingham residents Randy and Dayle Bailey, primarily transports materials used for highway construction needs.

“As a Richmond County-based company, we feel it is our responsibility to give back to our community and we recognize the economic, educational and social impact that a children’s museum will have in this area,” said Randy Bailey, vice president of Delco Transport, Inc. “We are pleased to do our part to help build something that all children can enjoy.”

Delco Transport, Inc.’s gift will be used to support the overall objectives of the Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham project, including renovation of the facility, exhibition design, ScienceReach program outreach, admission subsidy for the underserved, and long-term support for exhibition upgrades and maintenance. The contribution follows last week’s announcement that Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham met a challenge grant goal set forth by The Leon Levine Foundation.

“Delco’s pledge to support a project that will help enhance educational opportunities for the children and families in this region demonstrates their community commitment,” said John Mackay, president and CEO of Discovery Place. “We continue to be moved by the overwhelming generosity of this region and their desire to invest in future generations.”

The Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham campaign was initiated with a commitment of $6.6 million from the Cole Foundation and the Richmond Community Foundation, gifts that were facilitated by The Foundation For The Carolinas.

Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham will offer creative learning-through-play experiences for children and their caregivers that build essential childhood skills by encouraging curiosity, discovery and play. The new museum will be located on Washington Street in the former McKenzie Furniture building and may open as soon as early 2013.

Delco Transport Inc. is a trucking company established in Richmond County in 1997.
