The brackets also revealed for the first time in Southeastern Conference history, all six schools advanced to the postseason.
The Raiders will open the playoffs at home against a familiar opponent, Northwest Guilford, Friday in the Midwest pod. Richmond is the No. 4 seed in the Midwest, while the Vikings are the eighth overall seed in the 4AA and fifth in the pod.
This marks the fourth straight season Northwest Guilford will battle Richmond in the postseason. Two of the three previous meetings have been in the opening round. Last season, the Raiders defeated the Vikings, 45-21, in the second round.
“We’re happy to be in the playoffs, I’m happy to be playing another week” Richmond coach Paul Hoggard said. “Last year’s game was close and competitive until the fourth quarter.”
In the previous postseason matchups, Richmond has outscored Northwest Guilford, 117-28, or by an average of 39-9.
“They still have their quarterback (Matthew Pawlowski) and running back (Reid Baxter),” Hoggard said. “I think they have been starters for them since they were freshmen. They run around and are pretty good on defense.”
Page is the top seed in the Midwest as well as the top seed in the 4AA playoffs. Page will open the postseason against SEC member Pinecrest.
The winner of the Page-Pinecrest contest will battle the victor of the Richmond-Northwest Guilford game in the second round.
Hoke County was also placed in the Midwest pod. The Bucks are the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 2 Butler on Friday.
Lumberton earned the No. 5 seeding in the 4AA Mideast pod and will travel to Cary in the first round.
The remaining two SEC teams were placed in the 4A bracket.
SEC champion Scotland County snagged the No. 1 overall seed in the 4A playoffs. The Scots will face off with Harnett Central in the first round of the Mideast pod at Pate Stadium.
Also in the Mideast pod with Scotland County is Purnell Swett, the No. 8 seed. For the third straight season, the Rams will battle Hillside, last year’s 4A state champion, in the playoffs.
