CHAPEL HILL — Richmond Senior received the seventh overall seed in the 4AA football playoffs in the official bracket released Saturday evening.

The brackets also revealed for the first time in Southeastern Conference history, all six schools advanced to the postseason.

The Raiders will open the playoffs at home against a familiar opponent, Northwest Guilford, Friday in the Midwest pod. Richmond is the No. 4 seed in the Midwest, while the Vikings are the eighth overall seed in the 4AA and fifth in the pod.

This marks the fourth straight season Northwest Guilford will battle Richmond in the postseason. Two of the three previous meetings have been in the opening round. Last season, the Raiders defeated the Vikings, 45-21, in the second round.

“We’re happy to be in the playoffs, I’m happy to be playing another week” Richmond coach Paul Hoggard said. “Last year’s game was close and competitive until the fourth quarter.”

In the previous postseason matchups, Richmond has outscored Northwest Guilford, 117-28, or by an average of 39-9.

“They still have their quarterback (Matthew Pawlowski) and running back (Reid Baxter),” Hoggard said. “I think they have been starters for them since they were freshmen. They run around and are pretty good on defense.”

Page is the top seed in the Midwest as well as the top seed in the 4AA playoffs. Page will open the postseason against SEC member Pinecrest.

The winner of the Page-Pinecrest contest will battle the victor of the Richmond-Northwest Guilford game in the second round.

Hoke County was also placed in the Midwest pod. The Bucks are the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 2 Butler on Friday.

Lumberton earned the No. 5 seeding in the 4AA Mideast pod and will travel to Cary in the first round.

The remaining two SEC teams were placed in the 4A bracket.

SEC champion Scotland County snagged the No. 1 overall seed in the 4A playoffs. The Scots will face off with Harnett Central in the first round of the Mideast pod at Pate Stadium.

Also in the Mideast pod with Scotland County is Purnell Swett, the No. 8 seed. For the third straight season, the Rams will battle Hillside, last year’s 4A state champion, in the playoffs.

Real coach I want to ask you something. If everybody stayed healthy during this whole season and we were 11-0 going into the second round would u still have a problem about that option? Or did you have a problem about that option in 2008? I just think something wrong real coach when someone is okay with something when it works in their favor but complain when the same thing shows up and then its a problem cause it didn't go in their favor this time. In the summer before the season started it was already doubts cause we had lost a lot of players and knew we was going to be young so we was already really @ the bottom. When the season started we played sun valley and that change a lot of ppl and of course wanted to put Richmond at the top, especially that blowout score. That triple option work good that night because sun valley haven't seen nothing like that b4 and couldn't stop it. That game really started the fire and gave our young players confidence then it carried over into lee county game. After that lil injuries here n there until the big injuries came up and that didn't help cause we was already underdogs in the summer. Later u see what everybody was predicting before the season started, not that good but turn out better than most thought they would of done. You see Scotland like the triple option so bad that they stole it this year n ran it better with those seniors. If you notice this year about the schedule when we had our bye week Scotland did to and whoever we played Scotland played them next or like a game closer so they had plenty of film to study that triple option n us n the opponent that we played. I'm just saying sometimes we happy when it works but when it don't work its a problem.

RealCoach, I would like to know where you are getting all of these quotes from. Because I have not heard any richmond coach make any "Excuses" on why they win or loss. Maybe the players and coaches deserve better from some of the Raider's fan than what they have seen in the last two weeks. How much time have you giving to the players and coaches to make them better this year, other than to be in the stands and talk about how bad they are.It is fans like you that need to stay home on friday night's, so you don't feel so bad on Saturday mornings.

The dog ate my homework, I tripped on that blade of grass, the devil made me do it, we are a small rural county and my all time favorite " I had my best player out injured ". All these quotes are at the top of a very long list of whine 'Excuses'. These dogs won't hunt and Raider fans deserve better. A raider's team that was ranked as high as #2 in the state in some polls struggled through the conference season and then had to slink off the field with their tails between their legs and all we get is pitiful excuses about how bad we looked. Apologists will only make things worse. I submit to you that Raider fans are not spoiled, despite being a small rural co., raider fans have put their hearts and devotion into this team to help it be successful. I don't expect the team to win the state every year, contrary to popular opinion, but I do expect them to play with passion and pride when they are on the field. Like Admiral Nimitz said to Bull Halsey, " When you are in command, " COMMAND ". You can't lead a team to victory by starting out making excuses. Time to quit sandbagging, either lead or get out of the way! By the way, having a 15 year old qb had nothing to do with having 40 points hung on them. Later! Your beacon of truth, Real Coach

For the last FOURTEEN (14) years the Raiders have won at least TWELVE (12) games each season. Any other school in the state would love to be able to say that but not many if any can say that. Why have the Raiders been able to do this...a few of those years the Raiders were superior to the teams they faced. Other years the so called incompetent coaches we have got the players to overachieve. A REAL COACH would surely be wise enough to know that every year a small rural county cannot produce athletes that are the superior to the rest of the state. As for a simplified offense a 15 year old sophomore is the starting quarterback a REAL COACH should realize it may take time to learn the game. Nuff said...

Wow! Spoil, spoil, spoil raider fans. After a lost we hear all kinds of things that went wrong down to coaches, players and etc. The ones that talks about the coaches says "we need a coaching change and the coaches calln out wrong plays at the wrong time" well maybe so they might can do better in some of that area but that still didn't justify that lost from Scotland cause we beat them the last 17 years. Next the players. Number one the players are young and we have to stand by them no matter what because some of them may go through injuries or hard times off the field so we have to pray that they will get better in what they may be going through and whoever is next in line because of a player not been able to play is just have to step it up and move on and let the one that got hurt or anything feel like he's still playing in spirit. The only thing I can tell the players is that yall have to believe yall can win and have the will to fight for it. Now I just talked about the coaches and the players. The next thing I want to talk about is very very important to this football program and any other schools program is the fans. We can talk about the coaches and the players but one thing bout that is that the coaches and the players changes but fans are the same. So let me talk about these spoiled fans. For one, we always notice problems after a lost but never see them after a win. We always cheer some at a game when something happens good but don't cheer when players and coaches need us the most. Every game I went to this year I seen more players on the side trying to pump the crowd up I ever seen. The players should be focus on the game and we should be already loud and making noise no matter what the score is. Just don't forget the fans don't pose to change but they did this year. So fans you can do like a whole lot better. Now I want to talk about that Scotland win. First of all it was Scotland senior night- they had all seniors- they was thirsty after 17yrs of defeat-most importantly their players coaches and fans believed that they can win VS a young raider team- less willing to win- terrible support from the fans = 41 to 7 Scots.. I just want to say that we are not perfect and every year won't be an awesome year according to wins or loses. We all need to stand up and do our parts if its a fan, player or coach. So young raiders take your time at practice and work on getting better by the second. Don't worry bout outsiders cause we don't know how it feels to be out there. The best thing all young raiders can do is finish strong. Fans we have to do better so let's get loud and show more support because at the end of the day they are somebody's child if they not yours. I know its not very many seniors on this raider team but at least for the players that are seniors let's fight hard for them because this is their last year to be a raider as an player and a student. God bless everyone and hope everybody step up and believe that there will be success. Most important we live to fight another day.

Real Coach you are correct...something needs to change. I sat in the stands Friday night and cheered the Raiders on until time was out. What did the people around me do? Turned and stared. Golly, I wonder if that was you? I do and will support the complete Raider team win, lose or draw. If you really think the coaching staff is so bad...start coaching yourself...but not in the Journal or from the stands or from your easy chair. I am sure the coaching staff worked really hard on "coaching the fire out" of the team. (Sarcasm) You must be one of the fans that only support staff and team if they win the State.

I look for this to be a very short run in the playoffs for the Raiders. We simplified our offense early on and as the season progressed we never unsimplified it. We began to struggle as we entered the conference schedule. Losing to a Hoke team that didn't do much against any of the other teams in the conf. If you want to see an unsimplified version of our offense. See some tape of the Scots. I didn't see any kind of " Drive " or " Want To " in the Raider's performance on Friday nite. This goes back to the bad job of coaching and preparation that we are seeing. The Raider have had the fire coached right out of them. I think it goes back to the decision to create a 9th academy and have the kids learn the varsity system early on. Theoretically it might seem logical on the face of it, but in the real world it isn't working out. None of these 9th grade teams have looked good and they never challenged for a championship, despite having more talent than the other teams they faced. The coaching has been sub-par and the net effect has been to teach the kids how to lose. If these players are supposed to be reaping the fruit of getting started in the Raiders system earlier, why are we having to simplify the offense at the start of every season. Say what you will about the old Jr. High teams, but those teams played with fire, School pride, and a hardnose attitude. By the way, they also won a lot of championships and had a winning attitude that they bought with them to the high school. You may not agee with my statements, but you can't prove them wrong! Raider Fans, something needs to change.
