Tri-City Construction Project Manager Ken Meyer said that the construction of Walgreen’s on 74 Business in Rockingham should be completed by June.

“We’re on schedule - we’ve met all our deadlines and forecasts,” Meyer said. “We’ve got a good group of people from this area on the project.”

Meyer explained there is about 20 people working on the site right now, but there have been as many as 60 to 65 workers on the project before, and there will be about that many workers there in the future.

“We’ve hired people from the area,” Meyer said. “Anyone from surveyors, to carpenters and subcontractors.”

He explained the subcontractors have a local pool of workers they hire, and advertise locally when they need to hire more.

Walgreen’s builds about 600 stores a year, Meyer explained, and open a store every 14 hours.

“In North Carolina they’ve got 35 stores right now, in one stage or another of construction,” he said. “N.C. is a big growth area for them.”

He explained that there are Walgreen’s being built in Sanford, Monroe and Rockingham right now.

“Usually, they open about 30 to 60 days (after the end of construction), so they will probably open around the beginning of August,” Meyer said.

“One thing that I think people would like to know is how you can apply with Walgreen’s,” Meyer said. “You do it by going on their website, and as a new employer in town, they’ll be looking for people who have experience in retail, cosmetics, anyone who’s worked with photos, of course pharmacists and management.”

The company’s website is www.walgreens.com. There is a hyperlink on the left side of the page labeled career opportunities, where you can apply for different positions.
