ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond football team hit the field for a local cause this year as a part of the 2nd annual Alltel Wireless “Yards 4 Youth Football” program.
For every offensive yard gained by the Raiders varsity high school football team during their home games against Sun Valley and Lee County, Alltel pledged to donate $1 to the Richmond County Packers Youth Football League.
After every deep catch and big run was accounted for, the Raiders contributed a total of 1,080 yards during the first two “Alltel Nights.”
Alltel will present the Richmond County Packers Youth Football League with a donation for the total amount of yards gained during halftime Friday as part of “Alltel Night” in the Raiders’ game against West Forsyth. Benefiting youth football organizations will use the donation to offset the costs of player registrations, equipment and field maintenance, among other needs.
The game begins at 7:30 p.m., and fans can get involved by participating in pre-game festivities.
Supporters of the “Yards 4 Youth Football” program can visit www.alltelwireless.com/y4y to vote for their school and a chance to win a visit from Chad, the Alltel guy. The winning school will also receive $1,000 to help fund the high school homecoming dance. The contest will continue until tonight.
The “Yards 4 Youth Football” program will visit eight markets throughout the wireless carrier’s footprint during the 2011 high school football season.
