Zach Credle Nichols, 86, of Rockingham, passed away Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at his home. He was born Jan. 11, 1925 in Richmond County, a son of the late W. Cole and Maynie C. Nichols. Zach was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II. Zach was a Tail Gunner on a Torpedo plane while in the South Pacific. Zach also worked with LOF Glass Company until his retirement at age 72. He loved the outdoors and was an avid quail hunter. Zach also enjoyed his garden, always sharing his bounty with family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Matthew Seals officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, R. Thomas Nichols.
Surviving are his wife, Helene Springer Nichols of the home; children, Bonnie Nichols Entwistle and her husband, Ray of Rockingham, Zachary Springer Nichols and his wife, Derrer of Rockingham, Albert Sidney Nichols of Rockingham and Maynie Nichols Voss and her husband, Randal of Lexington, Ky.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Entwistle Lowery and her husband, Chris of Rockingham, Morgan Cole Entwistle of Rockingham, George Parker “Buck” Entwistle III. of Rockingham, Taylor Helene Grace Nichols of Rockingham, Emma Nichole Voss, Brinna Victoria Voss, and Stephen Cole Voss all of Lexington, Ky.; a great-grandson, Kellen Kai Lowery; and a sister, Martha Nichols Harris of Atlanta, Ga.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at his home.
