Graduates of Leak Street High School will be treated to a message from a man who grew up in Ellerbe and went on to become a North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice.
Former Chief Justice Henry Frye is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at Leak Street’s graduation tonight at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Rockingham Middle School. The public is invited to attend.
“I’m highly excited Chief Justice Frye accepted our invitation to speak to our graduating seniors this year,” Leak Street Principal Darryl Mason said Wednesday afternoon. “I hope the students take something positive away from this experience that will have an impact on their lives.”
This is the third graduation Leak Street has held since being reconstituted as a high school. Up until 1968, the school served as the segregated school for African-Americans.
Now, the school serves at-risk youth, offering alternative learning environments and even night classes to accommodate working students.
