The county’s first NCDBA Breakfast With A Prime event on Monday morning was a success, according to Deborah Hardison, Small Business Center Director.

“Attendance was decent for the first Prime event held in Richmond County,” said Hardison. “We had about 46 attendees from Richmond and Scotland counties.”

K2 Solutions partnered with the Small Business Center and the Chamber of Commerce to host the event.

“These events are intended to connect contractors who are currently doing business with the defense industry with potential sub-contractors,” said Jim McCaskill, Richmond Economic Development Vice Chairman.

“Many small businesses may feel they don’t have the support or infrastructure to provide services to defense contractors, but often small businesses are exactly what is needed,” said McCaskill. “Sub-contractors are often required to fulfill about 25 percent of a contract, so the services small businesses can provide are enough. 23 percent of business contracts are specifically set aside to be used by small businesses.”

McCaskill went on to say that, while he had hoped to see more participation and interest from Richmond County businesses, those who did attend indicated that the event had been worth their time.

“This was the first NCDBA breakfast event I’ve attended, there were lots of resources available there to small businesses,” said Chamber President Emily Tucker. “We are looking to set up another breakfast within the next few months.”

Hardison said that two small businesses in the county have expressed great interest in pursuing military contracts, and she hopes to announce their success in the near future.

“The Breakfast With A Prime event is a great venue for companies to learn more about other companies who have found success in the defense industry, gain resource information and build their contacts through a wonderful networking event,” said Joy Thrash, Executive Director NCDBA. “We look forward to holding another event in Richmond County.”
