William Covington, Rockingham native and Vietnam veteran, will be in the Leath Memorial Library History Room on Wednesday, May 25, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m and from 3-5:30 p.m. for a book signing.

Covington’s book, “War is Not All Hell,” was published in 2010, and chronicles his training and career as an Army medical evacuation helicopter pilot.

He tackled the writing project at the age of 68 because, “I promised my three children and myself that I would do it,” he said in the first chapter of the book.

Covington also said, in the book, “I have truly cherished this period of my life and I know that it had a great deal to do with developing the positive attributes of my character that I may have, and the way I have approached and lived my life.”

Despite the trials and tribulations of battle, in his book Covington seeks to recall the humorous details that he feels contributed to his positive attitude and helped carry himself and others through trying times.

The 1958 graduate of Rockingham High currently resides in Florida, but will be in town visiting friends and family the day of the book signing.

“I believe humor can help people through very difficult situations - even war,” said Covington. “I hope people read the book and see that there are always positives, even in bad times.”
