Residents of Richmond County ages 21 to 34 years will be the focus of a campaign to raise awareness of the consequences of irresponsible alcohol consumption.

A committee called Citizens Of Richmond for Responsible Living is formulating a media campaign to reach out to this age group under the supervision of Alcohol and Drug Services.

Angela Maxwell, prevention services manager for ADS, met Thursday with a local mass media subcommittee to get an idea of what media will be used to conduct a three-year campaign.

It was decided that costs of various media needed to be obtained before materials can be purchased.

Maxwell said a campaign already designed has been contacted to provide materials, and the subcommittee will have to decide how and where to spend limited grant funds.

A grant from Sandhills Mental Health is funding the program.

The message of the campaign is targeted at people who should never drink alcoholic beverages such as pregnant women, people under 21 years of age, recovered substances abusers and vehicle drivers.

Other women should restrict drinking to one alcoholic beverage a day, and men should limit alcohol consumption to two drinks a day.

Once costs are determined, the subcommittee will focus on where the best places will be to distribute information.

Roadside billboards are a main consideration for wide visibility to everyone.

Selected sites for other information will include local health fairs, churches, schools, local industries and businesses frequented by the age groups the effort hopes to reach.

An ADS coordinator for the program will also be available to speak before groups.

In addition to public service announcements with local media, the subcommittee will have brochures, posters and book marks with messages on them to distribute.
