Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a private non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities. The sorority was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University. The Laurinburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was chartered in Laurinburg in 1979 and services Scotland, Richmond and parts of Robeson County. Major programs are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Education Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health and Political Awareness. Each year, Laurinburg Alumnae awards scholarships to local students and community service projects are done in the three county service areas.

The Red and White Semi-Formal dance is held annually to raise funds for these scholarships and programs. All seniors at Scotland, Richmond Senior and South Robeson High Schools who have been accepted to a college or university can complete an application for consideration for a scholarship. One student will be awarded a scholarship from each school and students should check with their counselors for an application that must be postmarked by March 1.

The dance allows the public to contribute and participate in a night full of fun and fellowship with the purpose of the dance being to generate funds to help the Laurinburg Alumnae Chapter provide community service projects and scholarships for our service areas. This year the Red and White Dance will be held at the beautiful Cole Auditorium on the Campus of Richmond Community College. The dance will be held Feb. 19 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. and donations are $25.00.

The chapter will also host a Financial Fortitude Workshop on April 16 in Laurinburg. Please check our website, www.laurinburgdst.org for future information about the workshop. This workshop will be open to the public and will provide information about retirement planning and saving.
