ROCKINGHAM — A man was sent to the hospital early Monday afternoon after being shot.

The man told Richmond County sheriff’s deputies he was standing in his yard on Rohanen Avenue in East Rockingham when a vehicle drove by and someone shot, according to Chief Deputy Mark Gulledge.

He was shot once in the abdomen, Gulledge said.

The victim described the vehicle as being a dark-colored Nissan Maxima, according to Gulledge.

The call went out around 4 p.m., with several units responding they were en route.

FirstHealth EMS arrived and loaded the victim into an ambulance. After several minutes of sitting in front of his home, he was taken to a regional hospital for his injuries.

Several neighbors stopped by to see what was going on. A deputy threatened to seize a bystander’s cellphone if she took a photo, saying it would be classified as evidence and said it could be held for a long time.

Firecrackers popped in the distance as deputies cordoned off the area with yellow crime scene tape. Neighbors said they’ve heard the crackle of fireworks for the past two days.

Gulledge said a vehicle matching the description was stopped before he arrived on the scene, but deputies determined it was not the car they were looking for.

However, a female passenger in that vehicle was arrested on outstanding warrants, he said.

As of 6 p.m., Gulledge said there were no suspects in the shooting and the case was still under investigation.

The victim’s name is being withheld until family members can be notified, he added.
