ROCKINGHAM — A treasure trove of Civil War-era artifacts will be auctioned online beginning Wednesday, Rockingham-based Iron Horse Auction Co. has announced.

The 50-year collection of memorabilia includes antique bottles, books, letters, artwork, furniture and more, mostly from North Carolina.

“In my 42 year career as a North Carolina professional auctioneer, this is one of the best collections that we have had the privilege of selling,” said Tom McInnis, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Iron Horse. “This is truly a North Carolina history buying opportunity for anyone interested in period-type items.”

Auctioneers are not disclosing the owner’s name by that person’s request, McInnis said.

Featured items include a 1799 arrest warrant, a painting by Thomas Ashe — who was a member of the Confederate House of Representatives and Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and finally, an associate justice of the N.C. Supreme Court — and a, large group of North Carolina historical books, letters, wills, legal documents, North Carolina pottery, bottles, arrowheads, pipes, colonial items and Civil War-era currency.

The auction will be conducted online starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday and ending at 6 p.m. on both Wednesday, Dec. 9 and Thursday, Dec. 10.

Inspections will be by appointment only by email request to [email protected] and will take place only from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 174 Airport Road, Rockingham.
