ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Raiders head football coach Mike Castellano was arrested on an impaired driving charge Saturday night in Cary, according to jail booking records.

Castellano, 40, of 3745 Sweetgum St., Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was stopped at the Crossroads Cary Apartments, 2000 Crossroads Manor Court, around 9:45 p.m.

Officer J.M. Platz of the Cary Police Department arrested Castellano on a charge of misdemeanor driving while impaired, according to the City-County Bureau of Identification, which maintains arrest and booking files for Wake County law enforcement agencies.

The amount of Castellano’s bond and his court date were not immediately available.

Richmond County Schools Superintendent Dr. Cindy Goodman said she met with Castellano on Sunday and scheduled another meeting with the coach Monday afternoon.

A phone message left for Castellano on Sunday was not returned in time for this story.

Misdemeanor DWI occurs when a person drives on any highway, street or parking lot while under the influence of an impairing substance, including alcohol, drugs and lawfully prescribed medications, according to N.C. General Statute 20-138.1.

All defendants charged with a crime are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

Castellano was hired May 20 as head football coach and social studies teacher at Richmond Senior High School, earning an annual salary of $77,500. He replaced Paul Hoggard, who stepped down March 27 to accept the head coaching job at John A. Holmes High in Edenton.

Castellano led the Middle Creek Mustangs to a 32-8 record in three seasons as head coach before taking the reins at Richmond.

The Raiders are 3-1 this season following Friday’s 32-13 home loss to Butler. They will travel to Hope Mills this week to take on South View.
