Norton named All-MWC

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Alex Norton, native of Hamlet, was recently named Second-Team All-Mountain West Conference for his contributions on the Air Force football team’s offensive line.

Norton is a senior captain who led the Falcons in knockdowns and also helped them gain more than 5,000 yards of total offense this past season. He was the only Air Force player to make either the first or second All-MWC team.

During his college career, the former Richmond Raider played in 35 games and started in 34. He started every game last year when the team ranked third nationally in rushing yard per game (317.4).

Lady Tigers on a roll

LAURINBURG — The Temple Christian girls basketball team extended its win streak with a 60-58 overtime victory over conference foe Scotland Christian Academy on Tuesday.

Rachel Smith scored 23 points — making 10 of her 12 attempts from the free-throw line — and grabbed eight rebounds to help her team improve to 3-0 overall on the early season. The Lady Tigers, who have won 17 consecutive games dating back to last season, got a combined 32 points from Smith’s sisters Mary (20) and Anna (12) in their 53-29 victory over Shining Light Baptist Academy last week.

The Temple boys team, on the other hand, have yet to win a game this season. Sophomore Hayden Heavner scored a team-high 19 points in a 63-33 loss to Scotland Christian on Tuesday. Last week, junior center Josh Greene poured in a game-high 23 points and brought in 13 rebounds in a 65-49 loss to Shining Light Baptist.

Both teams will be in action next Tuesday, Dec. 5, when they host Berean Baptist Academy.

Richmond places 4th

MEBANE — The girls indoor track team placed fourth in its season-opening meet at Eastern Alamance on Wednesday.

Both Kibreanna Stewart and Crystal Johnson had the highest individual finishes for the Lady Raiders on the day, as Stewart finished second in the high jump and Johnson came in second in the shot-put competition. Monasia Kearns placed fifth in the 55-meter run.

Kearns teamed up with Maddisyn Diggs, Harmony Jones and Dymond McNeal in the 4×200 relay race, and as a group they were able to come in second place. The girls 4×800 relay team came in third place.

The Lady Raiders will travel to Fayetteville on Saturday for a meet, hosted by South View, at Reid Ross High School.
