BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. — The Marlboro Academy soccer team claimed the South Carolina Independent Schools Association state championship — its third under head coach Lynn McColl — with a 2-1 win over Conway Christian last week.
The title game, which was played at Francis Marion University’s soccer stadium in Florence, South Carolina, started off with a goal from freshman Hunter Newton who gave Marlboro the early one-goal advantage. Chase Williams stuck one in the back of the net later on in the first half and helped the Dragons take a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Conway scored on a penalty kick after intermission, bringing its deficit to just one goal, and almost tied the game at 2-2 with another penalty-kick opportunity. The second attempt, however, boucned off the goal post.
Marlboro goalkeeper Luke Johnson made 12 saves in the win, which was the Dragons’ fourth state championship in the last nine years. They won it all in 2014 and 2015, and were runners-up in 2013.
