PEMBROKE — Thanks to its fourth consecutive three-set victory Thursday evening, the Richmond volleyball team tied the program record for most wins in a season under head coach Shellie Wimpey — and it still has seven games left in the regular season.
Another all-around effort helped the Lady Raiders to a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-12, 25-12) at Purnell Swett. Senior Mackenzie Webb finished with 33 assists and 11 digs, senior Altman Griffin had a team-high 13 kills, sophomore Jadyn Johnson recorded four aces and both seniors Brianna Baysek and Owen Bowers finished with a block each.
There were also five players who tallied at least five digs in the win: sophomore Layne Maultsby (10 digs), junior Savannah Lampley (8 digs), sophomore Alexis Swiney (5 digs), Baysek (5 digs) and Griffin (5 digs)
Baysek and Bowers were second and third on the team with seven and six kills, respectively.
“We practiced spot serving and the girls did really well with that. Also, our passing was great and Owen had a great night,” Wimpey said. “They just stayed upbeat the whole game.”
The Lady Raiders have been on an unprecedented run this season. They’ve won more than seven games in a row for the first time since 2007, only had one match that lasted all five sets (at Union Pines two weeks ago), won in three sets in 11 of their 15 victories, and have already tied a record — broken by last year’s team — with three weeks left in the regular season.
But Wimpey says the team isn’t satisfied.
”Honestly, I haven’t really thought about it because we don’t want to stop there. We want to finish the season undefeated and make it past the second round of playoffs,” she said. “These girls are capable of achieving that, so that’s what we’re looking for.”
Richmond (15-0, 8-0 SAC) is back on the court next Tuesday when it makes the trip to conference foe Pinecrest, which will be its fourth straight away game. The Lady Raiders will return home to host Jack Britt next Wednesday.
