GREENSBORO — There wasn’t much action to go around for either Jake Ransom or Trey Watkins on Friday evening.
The two Richmond Senior baseball players are members of the Region 4 team that dropped a 2-1 decision to Region 3 in its second game of the 2017 Powerade State Games at UNC Greensboro.
Ransom only had one at-bat Friday. He stepped into the batters box in the bottom of the fifth inning after Baker Nelson (Harnett Central) picked up his only single of the night. Ransom watched as the opposing pitcher, Apex’s Sam Highfill, threw three consecutive balls to start off — but eventually struck out.
Watkins, who pitched the first three innings of Thursday’s opener, didn’t see the mound in the second game. Davidjohn Herz (Terry Sanford), Matthew Hyatt (Scotland) and Nelson took care of the pitching Friday night.
Region 3 scored the game’s first two runs.
Casey Nichols (Person) hit an RBI single that brought home Ben Miller (Durham Jordan) in the top of the third innning. Miller had reached first base after a single of his own as the inning’s second batter.
Right after Chris Thornburn (Cardinal Gibbons) was walked by Hyatt in the top of the fifth, Miller recorded an RBI double.
The bottom of the fifth started on a high note for Region 4 when Christian Jayne (Terry Sanford) led off with a single and then stole second. Following a fly ball, Seth Thorndyke (Fairmont) smashed one deep and brought home Jayne to cut the team’s deficit to just one run.
Neither team picked up any hits in the sixth inning, but Jayne recorded his second hit of the night in the bottom of the seventh. Brennen Herbert (Jack Britt) grounded out and then Thorndyke struck out to put an end to the game.
Region 4 (0-2) will face Region 8 at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
