ROCKINGHAM — A day after former Richmond Senior football coach Mike Castellano sent in his letter of resignation, school officials and central office personnel held a meeting to discuss the school’s plans going forward.

The job was officially posted on the Richmond County Schools’ website and will stay up until filled — for now.

“We’re going to hold the application process open for right now,” athletic director Ricky Young said. “When we come back from Christmas we’re going to look and see what we’ve got. Then we’ll probably set a deadline on when we’re going to stop taking applications.”

After going 20-7 in his two seasons on the Richmond sideline, Castellano officialy stepped down from his position Monday morning. No details were given as to why Castellano resigned, but Richmond County Schools Superintendent Dr. Cindy Goodman claimed it was a “personal decision” in a statement released to the Daily Journal on Monday afternoon.

Young and Jim Butler, the school principal, met with the football team’s coaching staff and players Tuesday in order to reassure them that school and district officials are committed to the matter at hand.

“We’re committed to the program and the players,” Young said. “We just want to make sure that everybody knows that we’re going to move on this as quickly as possible. But at the same time, we’re going to try to assure that we get the right person for the job.”

This will be Richmond’s second time looking for a new football coach in less than two years, as Castellano was hired almost two months after Paul Hoggard resigned on March 27, 2015. The next hire will be the 11th head football coach in the school’s history.

“Anyone’s who’s interested could go ahead and send in their resumes,” Young said. “And we’ll go from there.”
