Raiders finish 1st at homecoming
ROCKINGHAM — Both Richmond Senior cross country teams celebrated their first-ever homecoming race with No. 1 finishes, over Hoke and Lumberton, at Hinson Lake on Tuesday.
Hoke came in second in the boys race, while Lumberton was the runner-up in the girls race.
Zachariah Hamilton’s time of 18:21 was good enough for first place. Jackson Carter, Kristofer Spivey and Dylan Richardson finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
For the Lady Raiders, Ariel Brown came in second with a time of 24:08. Harmony Jones was third, Tyra Strong finished fourth and Cameron Hudson came in fifth.
Both teams will compete next Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Purnell Swett.
Rockies searching for players
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Rockies, a 12u travel baseball team, are currently in search of players. Those interested cannot turn 13 before May 1, 2017.

Ellerbe, Hamlet split matches
ELLERBE — The Ellerbe and Hamlet Middle School volleyball teams split their doubleheader on Monday.
The Lady Red Rams won the first match (25-15, 25-14), but the Lady Wildcats bounced back to win in three (25-10, 10-25, 15-10) in the second match.
Ellerbe, who now has a 1-3 overall record, will host Rockingham on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Rockingham downs Anson
ROCKINGHAM — Emy Cooley’s 28 points helped the Rockingham Middle School volleyball team defeat Anson in both matches on Monday afternoon.
In the first match, the Lady Rockets won both sets by a score of 25-11. They didn’t allow as many points in the second match, defeating Anson by scores of 25-6 and 25-10.
Allyiah Swiney and Jakerra Covington combined for 48 points, while Taylor Chappell scored 14 points. Georgia Grace Anderson registered eight points and Kaylee Parker added two.
Rockingham’s next game is Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. at Ellerbe.
