ROCKINGHAM — Whether you’re into drifting or drag racing, for the fun of it or for money, Rockingham Dragway should be your destination for acceleration Saturday night when round five of the Phantasm Motorsports Street Wars series expands to include Outlaw Street Drags and “After Midnight Underground” grudge racing.
In addition to unlimited “fun runs” down the high-traction quarter mile dragstrip, the Saturday-only program will include three classes of heads-up Outlaw Street racing, four-wheel drifting on The Rock’s drift course in the Koss Motorsports Drift Series and an extra hour of racing “after midnight” open to all cars, trucks and bikes.
Gates open at 5 p.m. Saturday with unlimited time runs — from 6 p.m. until midnight — for a vehicle-and-driver fee of $25, which includes free entry into one of the three Outlaw classes: Power Adder (for cars or trucks with nitrous oxide, turbocharger or supercharger) Non-Adder (for normally- aspirated engines) or Front Wheel Drive.
For an extra $10, racers are invited to stick around for “After Midnight Underground” — a special midnight-to-1 a.m. session in which the elapsed time and speed readouts will be deactivated and only the win light will be displayed.
Winners’ plaques will be awarded in all the three Outlaw Street classes along with a trophy for “best burnout.”
Away from all the competition, drivers and crew members, along with their friends and families, can enjoy concession stand specials including a hamburger-and-Pepsi for $5 or a hot dog-and-fries for $4.
Discount coupons for $5 off the $15 adult admission or $5 off a race entry are available at Maness Tire and Retreading on Airport Road in Rockingham. Children under 12 are free with a ticketed adult and there is free parking in The Rock’s main lot.
