Whitfield leads school to title

Former Hamlet High and Richmond Senior baseball coach George Whitfield guided his new school, Arendell Parrott Academy from Kinston, to the NCISAA 2A championship earlier this month. Parrott defeated Harrells Christian Academy 6-4 in the first game and 13-4 in the second to sweep the best 2-of-3 series. It was the school’s first state championship since 1996.

Swimming lessons set for Rockingham

The city of Rockingham Parks and Recreation Department will continue accepting applications for its youth swimming lessons. The cost is $40 per session and a discount is available for a family that registers two or more children. There will be three sessions and children will be divided by age group (4 to 6 and 7 and older). The first session is scheduled for June 15 to 26, the second will run from July 6 to 17 and the final classes are set for July 20 to 31. The 7 and older group will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. The youngest group will meet from 11 a.m. to noon. For information or to register, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 910-895-6810.

Rockingham accepting summer camp signups

The city of Rockingham Parks and Recreation Department will continue to take signups for its Summer Day Camp programs. The cost is the camp is $65 per week with an additional $6 for insurance for the first week of camp. A deposit is required at the time of registration. The camp will begin June 15 and run through Aug. 7 and operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. For information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 910-895-6810.

Softball league looking for players

The Hot Mamas softball league is currently looking for players interested in playing. The cost is $20 and registration is on-going at Ellerbe Town Hall. Any women interested in playing must present a driver’s license at the time of registration. Signups will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. June 2. Entering its fourth season, the league is open to women 35 years of age and older. The league’s mission is to enjoy exercise, fun and Christian fellowship. The first games of the season are scheduled for June 13 and will the league will run for five to six weeks, concluding with a tournament.

Rohanen hoops camp scheduled

The annual Rohanen Middle School Basketball Camp for boys and girls 5 to 16 years of age is set for June 15 to 19 at the school. The hours are 8 a.m. to noon each day. Frank Harrington will head the camp. Participants will be instructed on improving their skills such as dribble, passing and shooting. There will also be a hot shot competition.
