LOCUST — The Rockingham Angels all-star team was down to its final three outs and was trailing by five runs.

Even though it recorded two hits in the inning, Rockingham found a way to scratch out six runs to pull out a 13-12 come-from-behind victory over Anson late Monday night to win the North Carolina Dixie Softball District 4 championship.

Allyiah Swiney got things started in the fifth with a walk. Claire High followed with a walk of her own. After a strikeout, Meredith Standridge drew another base on balls. Maylyn Wallace recorded an RBI-single to score Swiney. Natalia Rodrigues added a two-run single to plate High and Standridge to trim the deficit to 12-10.

Josie Anderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kyla Sampson walked to force Wallace home to pull Rockingham within one run. Ryelan Lyerly also walked, allowing Rodrigues to tie the game. Savannah Jordan was hit by a pitch, scoring Anderson to put Rockingham up for good.

Swiney then took to the pitching circle in the bottom of the inning looking to earn the victory in relief. After allowing a lead-off single, Swiney settled down to retire the next two batters before issuing a walk. With the tying run on second and the game-winning run on first, Swiney struck out the final Anson batter to close out the victory.

Both teams earned bids to the state tournament hosted by Montgomery County.
