Hamlet sweeps cross country meet

The Hamlet Middle School boys and girls cross country teams captured Thursday’s Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference’s meet at Hinson Lake.

Hamlet finished with a score of 30 in the boys. Ellerbe was second with a score of 56. Rockingham was fourth at 103 and Rohanen took fifth at 150.

Joseph Nicholson, of Hamlet, was first in the boys meet. Ellerbe’s Tyler King was second.

Nicholson’s teammates Luke Hawkes, Evan Baxley and Noah Altman placed fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively. Ellerbe’s River Meachum was 10th, Cale Luckey was 12th and Johan Chavez was 13th. Rockingham’s Drew Pavis, Kaden Walker, Bradford Pittman and Carson Jordan were 17th, 20th, 21st and 22nd, respectively. Rohanen runners Jacob Hughes, Hector Cosco, Tyler Michael and Matthew Bailey finished 28th to 31st.

In the girls, Hamlet had a score of 44 to edge Rockingham by five points. Ellerbe and Rohanen didn’t post a team scores.

Hamlet’s Emily Buie was the individual winner. Buie’s teammate Aieral Brown was third. Kamya Williams finished ninth for the Red Rams, while Aliyah Bell was 11th.

Rockingham had runners fifth through seventh — Abigail Hudson, Abbey Calhoun and Carolina Whitley. Rockingham’s other top finisher was Savanna Harrelson, who came in 15th. Ellerbe’s Ariana Farias was eighth. Rohanen runners Katelyn Millen and Isabelle Walters were 24th and 25th.

RSHS baseball fruit sale on-going

The annual fruit sale to benefit the Richmond Senior baseball team will continue until Nov. 13. If interested in making a purchase, contact Richmond athletic director/baseball coach Ricky Young at 910-997-9812 or any of the players.

Youth basketball signups under way in Rockingham

The city of Rockingham Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for its youth basketball program until Dec. 2. The cost is $25 for city residents and $35 for non-residents. There will be an additional $6 charge if the child is not currently insured. The leagues are open to boys and girls from 7 to 16 years of age. Participants may not reach 17 on or before Jan. 1. All signups will be accepted at Browder Park Recreation Center.
