CHARLOTTE — Milton Moffett isn’t a boxing veteran, but Saturday evening he was.

At least in his own corner.

Moffett, a member of the The Dungeon Boxing Club, represented North Carolina in the Battle of the Carolinas at the Charlotte Boxing Academy. Moffett fought South Carolina’s Dakari Ayaise in the 152-pound novice division.

It was Moffett’s second fight. The coaches in his corner — Jonathan Brayboy and Jake Elder — were making their debuts after earning their coaching certificates last month.

Coaches Brandon Dawkins and Gray Collins are normally in the corner for Dungeon boxers when they are fighting, but elected to step back for the day and let Brayboy and Elder lead Moffett.

Moffett lost to Ayaise by unanimous decision. Ayaise also defeated Moffett in an earlier fight in Fayetteville.

“He’s come a long way in seven months,” Dawkins said about Moffett.

The 17-year-old junior at Richmond Senior admitted he wasn’t sure if he was going to like boxing when he first stepped foot inside the Dungeon training facilities.

“I didn’t think I would like getting punched,” Moffett said. “I didn’t think I could do it at first, but I want to go pro in boxing.”
