ROCKINGHAM — First-year Richmond Senior football coach Mike Castellano wanted to create a jamboree while still at Middle Creek and was laying down the groundwork for one before the upcoming season.

Castellano took his thoughts and ideas with him to Richmond when he accepted the position. This season East Rowan, Holly Springs, Jack Britt, Reagan and Wakefield will join Richmond Wednesday (Aug. 12) afternoon for the first home jamboree under Castellano.

The varsity games will begin at 4 p.m. Tickets are $3 and concessions will be available to purchase. Richmond’s junior varsity team will have a scrimmage at 3 p.m.

“We were starting to create one at Middle Creek,” Castellano said. “Last year, Reagan wanted another scrimmage. After that, we started talking and we liked the idea of creating one.”

Castellano believes playing host to a jamboree is a good way to bring the community together and show its support for the team before kicking off the season.

For years, Richmond participated in a jamboree under former coach Paul Hoggard. Richmond elected to participate in scrimmages only after Clayton officials postponed the Highway 70 Jamboree in 2012.

“We would like to add a few more teams,” Castellano said. “I think it will be good competition for everyone and it’s a good way to get everyone in the community involved.”

Richmond will also have a scrimmage 10 a.m. Tuesday against Millbrook at home. Last season, Millbrook eliminated Richmond from the second round of the state 4AA playoffs.

Richmond will conclude its preparations for its season-opener when it travels to Holly Springs to participate in a jamboree Aug. 14. The Raiders are scheduled to hit the gridiron at 6 p.m.
