The festival was named in honor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s past Chancellor Holden Thorp. The event featured hands-on activities focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Children and parents were engaged in science exploration. Mineral Springs School received a grant for this science night and provided all of the materials necessary. The North Carolina Science Festival is a two-week statewide series of events showcasing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Thorp Science Night is said to demonstrate an investment in the scientists of the future. According to staff, Mineral Springs School students, parents, and faculty all experienced an amazing event. The school said it was thankful for the high school volunteers and facilitators that helped to make the science night a reality.

Perhaps you’ve driven down Oak Avenue in Hamlet when the azaleas are in bloom and seen the house with flowers that seem to blanket the property in color. Winnie and Wade Weatherly built their house in 1960, and Winnie Weatherly said each year they planted 25 azalea bushes.
