Mallory Brown of Rockingham has been promoted to a full-time reporting position with the Richmond County Daily Journal.
Brown first joined the Daily Journal in November 2011 as newsroom clerk and part-time staff writer, and began her new full-time writing job on Aug. 20.
“I was excited to learn about my promotion to full-time reporter,” she said. “This allows me to have a voice I haven’t had before, and I look forward to sharing the stories of others.”
Brown’s reporting beats include Hamlet City Council, Dobbins Heights and Hoffman, Richmond County Schools and education, health, law enforcement, tourism and economic development, charity and fundraisers, Historical Society, senior citizens and the library system.
Although born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Brown spent most of her summers in Rockingham with family.
She attended Myrtle Beach High School, then attended the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, where she majored in Entertainment Technology. She graduated in 2007 and went on to the College of Charleston, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in Creative Writing.
Brown said her first job as news clerk helped her grow into her job as a staff writer.
“Having been here a year, I’ve learned so much,” said Brown. “I’ve done things I’ve never imagined doing and I’m proud of how I’ve handled the challenges so far.”
Brown said she looks forward to covering her beats, of which she especially enjoys education, law enforcement and charities.
“I enjoy writing about fundraisers and charity events and helping people spread the word about causes they represent,” she said. “I like being a medium for positive impact in the community. Networking has been fun.”
In her free time, Brown enjoys horseback riding and antiquing.
