The Tams — always a crowd favorite — take the stage this evening to kick off the 2013 season of Plaza Jam in Rockingham.
The popular outdoor concerts are free and staged on the hillside next to Rockingham City Hall, at 514 Rockingham Road, the first Thursday of each month from May through October. The fun unfolds from about 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The AMVets will be providing hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue sandwiches, drinks, and other goodies for purchase.
The Tams — formed in Atlanta, Ga., in the early ’60s — have performed at Rockingham’s Plaza Jam every year since 2005.
The Tams hard work, patience and perseverance paid off early when they were signed to Arlen records and had their first Billboard hit in 1962, the single “Untie Me,” which was number 12 on the R&B chart. The current members include Charles Pope, his son Li’l Redd, Robert Arnold, Elton Richardson, Greg Gallashaw and Reginald Preston.
