The Richmond County Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustments will consider allowing the opening of a new flea market in Hoffman.
At its next regular meeting on May 14 at 7 p.m. in the Commissioners Chambers on the second floor of the County Administration Building, 125 S. Hancock St., in Rockingham, the Planning Board will review a conditional use permit application submitted by Vanessa Greene.
Greene is requesting a conditional use permit to open and operate a vendor market place, to be located at 4033 Hwy. 1, north of Hoffman.
According to Planning Director James Armstrong, Greene is requesting to operate a flea market, or “open air market.”
In the case report that will be presented to the board, Armstrong wrote, “The property is zoned Rural Residential and also falls within the Highway Commercial District which allows such uses as conditional permits. The property in question contains a total of 1.44 acres and currently includes a single family dwelling. The applicant has been advised that subject to approval the property would need to be subdivided to separate the houses. At least one acre of land would need to remain with the single family dwelling as the property falls within the Drowning Creek Water Supply Watershed.”
Greene’s application showed that if approved, the market will be named “Hoffman Market Place” and will include local arts and crafts, produce, flea market, jewelry and possibly a chair massage. The proposed market would be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The application stated that “once a month all youth (would) sell their merchandise” and that the market would “establish a relationship with different churches in the area and promote the youth.”
