Megan Wallace, 18, of Rockingham, has joined the Daily Journal news staff as an intern.
Wallace attends Richmond Early College High School and this year she is a Supersenior, meaning she is in her 13th year. She is also enrolled in college classes at Richmond Community College and enjoys English and Spanish.
“My college classes are helping me with my high school classes,” said Wallace. “I really like my Spanish teacher.”
Wallace is using her experience at the Daily Journal for her senior project, which will be on various forms of media. She said she is most interested in tabloids.
So far, Wallace has enjoyed learning about Letters to the Editor, and said she finds the job of a journalist interesting.
“I like that you can go out to (locations) and you don’t have to stay in the office all day,” said Wallace. “I like that (journalists) help each other.”
Wallace said she looks forward to learning different writing styles. This internship is her first job.
“I’ve never worked a job before,” said Wallace. “Now I get to feel how a job is. I hope to write articles soon.” On the afternoon of the day she was interviewed for this story, Wallace covered a blood drive at RCC and wrote her first bylined article for the paper.
Wallace said she is aiming for her doctorate degree. She said she plans to transfer to Wingate University to enter the medical field.
“I would like to maybe go into optometry, but that could change,” said Wallace. “I know I want to be a doctor.”
