Jeff Moore and Rodney Honeycutt of Git-R-Done Garage didn’t know they’d catch a massive catfish when they left their shop Thursday morning around 8:30 a.m.
By noon, Moore and Honeycutt were hauling a 78-pound blue catfish onto their boat.
“We caught him on a noodle with shad,” said Honeycutt. “We caught a nice one. It’s the biggest fish I’ve ever caught in my life.”
Honeycutt and Moore have been fishing since they were little boys. They caught this monster of a fish on the Pee Dee River, on the Anson Lake side, according to Honeycutt.
Honeycutt said he heard a recent record from Raleigh where someone caught a blue catfish weighing 89 pounds.
“We cleaned it and put it in the freezer,” said Honeycutt, who isn’t sure how long the meat will last. “We have a lot of fish fries up at the shop.”
Moore said he didn’t realize how big the fish was until they struggled to pull it in.
“It took a while to get it on the boat,” said Moore. “I think it would have weighed over 80 pounds when it had just come out of the water but we weighed it after it had been out for a while. I’ve never seen a fish that big — not at the river.”
Git-R-Done Garage is located at 145 Sandhill Road, Rockingham.
