The health of your heart and kidneys will be the focus during Sandhills Regional Medical Center’s Senior Extra kickoff tonight at Cole Auditorium in Hamlet.
Sandhills Regional’s new nephrologist and internal medicine physician, Yaw Boateng, M.D., and cardiologist Debbie Wright-Thomasson, M.D., will be a part of the physicians’ panel during the program.
Each will discuss their specialties and then take questions from the audience.
Boateng will talk about kidney health under the topic, “Let’s Drink to Your Health.” He will talk about the role of your kidneys, how to take care of them and prevention of chronic kidney disease that can lead to dialysis.
Those living with diabetes and hypertension are urged to attend as those are the top causes of chronic kidney disease.
Boateng’s practice, Sandhills Nephrology, opened this week in Bennettsville, S.C. His Hamlet office will be opening soon.
Wright-Thomasson of Hamlet Cardiology will talk about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. While heart disease is often considered to be more prevalent among men, the truth is that more women die of heart disease each year than men — making it the number one killer among women — and claiming more lives than all forms of cancer combined.
The Senior Extra kickoff is for seniors ages 60 and older. It will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at Cole Auditorium and is free to attend.
In addition to the physicians’ panel, there will be screenings, informational booths and refreshments. Freedom Fitness, a new fitness center in Rockingham, will also be on hand going over various exercises for seniors.
