Leak Street Career Fair is part of senior project
by Dawn M. Kurry
Richmond County Daily Journal

Three months of learning about making positive choices has culminated in a senior project and career fair at Leak Street High School, led by 12th grader William Patterson and Brenda L. David of Alcohol and Drug Services.

On Friday, from 10 a.m. until noon, several businesses will come together to show students what career choices are available in the area and how they can become involved, whether it’s through an internship or volunteer work.

“Patterson’s project was on substance abuse,” said David. “He has shadowed me for three months. This project is called Positive Choices because as the only way to avoid abusing drugs is to make positive choices with your career and education. We decided to show the different directions positive choices can take you.”

Richmond Community College will have representatives available to discuss programs with students and other representatives will be there such as from Vocational Rehabilitation, Rockingham Volunteer EMS, House of Fish, Army Reserve, Rockingham Police Department, Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham, Richmond County Daily Journal and many more.

“It is important that students understand the importance of how one decision can affect their life,” said David. “One negative or one positive.”

Rockingham Police Department will be taking fingerprints and information to make ID cards for students.

Other businesses that are scheduled to attend are Perdue Farms, East Rockingham Fire Department, as well as Essential Living Home Care. If you are interested in setting up a booth at the event, contact Brenda David at 910-730-9326 or call Kim Covington at Leak Street High School at 910-997-9800.
