Gwendolyn Wicker of Rockingham has received two awards this year for her contributions to the field of education and to the church community.
Wicker was honored on July 4 as the first of three national recipients of the Church of God in Christ Great Commissioner Award, and was featured on the cover of the July-August edition of “Inspiration Today” magazine. The award was presented by Bishop Charles Blake Sr. during the 2012 AIM National Convention in Birmingham, Ala., according to a press release.
“Wicker was instrumental in opening the Woodrow Morman Senior Center in Durham in 2006 and served as the first director,” read the press release. “Wicker also received a plaque in May commemorating her receipt of the Heritage Registry of Who’s Who Honored Member for Accomplishments and Achievements in the Field of Education. Wicker currently works in the Durham school system.”
Wicker is a member and Head Mother at Victorious Praise Church of God in Christ in Durham. As the daughter of the late Elder Curtis Morman and Missionary Rosa Morman of Rockingham, Wicker has served in many positions throughout her life; choir member and Sunshine Band leader, Purity Class leader, Announcing Secretary, YPWW teacher and YWCC president. She also served as local, district and state usher and member of the Senior Usher Board.
“Wicker has worked as a foster parent and positive role model to three young ladies, and continues her work in the church and community,” read the press release.
According to her mother, Rosa Morman, Wicker has been a selfless giver since she was a child.
“She always helped out if she was able to assist,” said Morman. “She worked with Leak Street Alumni to put on events and projects. She was just like that. I’m proud of her. She was always doing things in the church, too. She was born and raised in Rockingham.”
As Assistant Executive Director for Healthy Start Academy in Durham, Wicker has worked extensively to assist the charter school since its inception in 1997. In addition she volunteers on the Board of Directors and was honored when the charter school renamed their cafeteria the Gwendolyn Wicker Cafeteria to recognize her many years of service.
