Friday marked the two-year anniversary for the Habitat for Humanity of the North Carolina Sandhills ReStore in Rockingham, located at 1300 Broad Avenue. The store celebrated by giving away cupcakes to customers during the day.
The ReStore specializes in selling both new and gently used items, and also carries building materials, furniture and appliances. Unfinished wooden cabinets have also been added to the inventory beginning this month.
“The ReStore is our number one source of funding within Richmond County for fulfilling our mission,” said Chris Carpenter, affiliate operations manager for Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills.
And for the past two years, the store has continued to grow in numbers.
“I think it’s brought awareness to the community,” Carpenter said. “We knew going into it that it wasn’t going to be a sprint — it’s more like a marathon. We’re continuing to build support … Our store numbers are up from the first year and we’re really starting to see an increase in the amount of customers coming in.”
Carpenter said the store is currently working to build awareness in the community.
“There are still people that come in and have no idea that we were here,” he said. “So right now, we’re trying to build that awareness.”
ReStore Manager Trey Robbins has been with Habitat for Humanity for two and a half years.
“We are gaining support every month,” Robbins said. “We’re receiving more and more donations — but we still need as much as possible. I see improvement all the time.”
The store’s proceeds are used to benefit local Habitat for Humanity projects, such as a Habitat home located on Clark Street in Rockingham.
“Donations drive our business, but we’ll also be going to events through the fall to help raise support and awareness,” Robbins said, adding that the ReStore plans to sell items at the Seaboard Festival this year.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
